Santuari de Lluc
santuari de lluc
The Santuario de Lluc is a heritage site belonging to the Mallorcan diocese. The priory and a secular team ensure the perfect operation of the administration, pastoral activity and the ancient Escolania de Blaquets. They carry out the laborious and excellent task of maintaining the idyllic cultural environment.

In the Lledoner square of the same sanctuary, you will find the start of a cobbled path that leads to the same point where the Holy Figure of the Virgin was found. One of the most spiritually charged routes of our sanctuary, where the nature of the place combines with the history it treasures. A path marked by five monuments that represent the mysteries of the Rosary and that invites prayer, meditation and contemplation. From here, you can contemplate the panoramic view of the Lluc valley and the so-called Clot d’Aubarca: with its amalgam of greens in summer and the possibility of snow during winter. Once you reach the top, a large cross that crowns the entire space and a wrought iron monument indicate that you have reached the point of the Apparition.
The priest and writer Antoni Maria Alcover i Sureda was born in Manacor in 1862. He held important positions in the ecclesiastical hierarchy and left us an important legacy of works in the Catalan language that form part of our traditional history. Among them is the collection of “Rondalles Mallorquines d’en Jordi d’es Racó”. Likewise, together with Francesc de Borja Moll, he created the Diccionari Català-Valencía-Balear, for which he is best known.
The church is not only the most monumental part of the Sanctuary of Lluc, but also the most emblematic and important, as it houses the image of the Virgin Mary. The current temple, with a basilica plan and Baroque design, was built between 1622 and 1691 with stone extracted from these same places. Inside is the main altarpiece by Master Jaume Blanquer, with the image of Saint Mary. Other works of art have enriched the place over time. Worthy of note are the annexed buildings, such as the sacristy built in the first half of the 18th century and the Camarín where Our Lady can be venerated. This room is considered the heart of the entire sanctuary, the sancta sanctorum as many authors have catalogued it. The church of Lluc has received several distinctions, such as the title of Royal by concession of Charles IV. In 1962 Pope John XXIII elevated it to the category of Basilica. At the initiative of Bishop Pere Joan Campins Barceló, the architect Antonio Gaudí, one of the best exponents of Catalan modernism, decorated the interior of the church at the beginning of the 20th century. We can find the monumental statue of this prelate in front of the main façade and presiding over the square that bears his name.
Made up of eight halls, the Lluc Museum features a diverse group of archaeological artefacts, treasures, Mallorcan alcoves, sacred imaginary, ceramics, paintings, artisanal textiles and part of the famous work by Josep Coli Bardolet. It was inaugurated in 1952, and has received numerous donations from a number of collectors and artists. An essential space for passionate art lovers.
In the Magnolia Garden there is a monument dedicated to Father Joaquim Rosselló, founder of the Missionaries of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary. The members of this religious congregation became custodians of the Sanctuary at the end of the 19th century. It was in a lamentable state of precariousness originating with the confiscation of ecclesiastical property by the minister Mendizabal. The missionaries, with 128 years of presence in Lluc, managed to raise the spiritual, cultural and material level of the entire complex. In 2019, the Bishopric of Mallorca entrusted the management of Lluc to a team of secular priests and deacons.
The aim of the garden is to display and preserve the great diversity of plant species that grow in a natural-looking environment. The abundance of water has created an ecosystem for numerous aquatic plants and has encouraged the presence of a variety of wildlife, including many birds, who come to drink water during the long, dry summer.
Another aim is the preservation of biodiversity, with special attention to the protection of endemic and native species of the Balearic Islands, as well as those originating from various regions of the world. There are numerous different ecosystems to be found in the garden, all of them accompanied by one of the main protagonists: water. There is a section dedicated to medicinal and aromatic plants, together with a collection of trees and shrubs called the "Arboretum", which includes native species from the western Mediterranean and temperate forests in various parts of the world. This collection is accompanied by ornamental plants characteristic of Mediterranean gardens.
